The Wedding Photographer’s Guide to Posing

Come on and Vogue. Let your body move to the music. Madonna said it and posed for it. Now we are here looking for ways to pose. Not all of us are models, in fact very few of us are. But that does not mean that posing has to be weird or awkward for us. Photography is happening all around us. For the most part, we know to smile and look at the camera, but what do you do when you’re taking your engagement and wedding photos? Do you look at the camera? Do you try to pose? Here’s The Wedding Photographer’s Guide to Posing.

Loving Poses

Wedding and engagements are all about the love you share with your significant other. The story of your love and who you are as a couple. Therefore, there are going to be a lot of loving-style poses. Getting close to one another. Kissing is going to happen a lot. There’s going to be lots of coming together and holding each other tight. For a lot of couples, these will not be anything new, but doing them in front of someone else can be a little intimidating. PDA is not a lot of couple’s style. But the pictures are meant to show your love, so don’t be afraid to get a little closer. No one is going to judge you, and if they do, send them our way. We’ll talk to them for you.

The poses to get ready for in the loving category are as follows.

  1. Kissing – That’s just normal in these shoots and on this day.
  2. Hugging – Another typical pose, so make sure you put on your deodorant.
  3. Holding hands – A pretty typical symbol for love that most people can do easily.
  4. Dipping – We’ve all seen it but a few don’t know how to do it. Practice at home, for sure.

The big thing you need to remember is if any of these things don’t seem like your style, be sure to let your photographer know. A good photographer wants to make you comfortable, not feeling awkward.

Fun Poses

Every now and then, you get to see poses that couples do that really blow up the social media feeds. The couple s just having fun, either with their wedding party or by themselves. You see the people laughing, maybe the groomsmen are doing something funny, or the bridesmaids have put on a funny face. Whatever the makeup of your wedding party, it’s important to make sure you have fun. The day is long and can be stressful, but the party isn’t just there to stand with you at the altar. They can help you have fun, even when posing.

Smiling is the most common pose that you will see in anyone’s album. The faces of those that celebrated their day showing off their teeth in big grinning faces. These are common, but for good reason. Smiles are what we do when we feel happy. They day is supposed to be happy. So the smile just fits. Show it off in whatever way you can, whether it be while laughing, or even just talking with your party. Let the smile come through in the pictures.

Be Yourself

The most fun that we have had in photographing couple is when they come with some ideas for poses. They can do things that we have never even thought of. They really let their personality’s show in what they do. It is our job to let your personality show in the pictures, but from we can’t know everything about you, only you and possibly your therapist can do that. So don’t be afraid to let your personality show. Give the photographer some of your favorite poses that you’ve seen. Even go off script a little bit and do what you can.

We got to take some awesome engagement photos with Afton and Caleb. One of the things that we did with them was let the personality show. They came up with a few ideas of pretending to be on the cover of a rap album. They gave us some awesome photos with that. After, we came across the Viking ship in front of US Bank stadium. Naturally, we had to take photos as if they were Vikings. We had a blast and letting them just be themselves is what gave us some of the best photos. One thing we can give to you for this Wedding photographer’s guide to posing is to be yourself.

Photographer’s Responsibility

When you get a good photographer, they will come with poses ready to go. They will give you what you need to make your photos look spectacular. Not only that, but they will make you not feel awkward. They will put you at a sense of ease. The photographer needs to get good photos, they need to make you look good. If they are making you feel awkward and putting you out of your place, they are not doing it right. With that being said, sometimes a pose can feel a little weird. Not natural. But if you’ve got a good photographer, you can trust them. They know that the pose will look great, even if in the moment, it feels a little weird.
