Photography Chains versus the Individual Photographer

The cookie cutter wedding album. We’ve all seen it. The pictures look almost exactly the same as ones we’ve seen before. The couple’s personality is nowhere to be seen. It’s just the same old same old. A lot of photography and videography companies tout some decently low prices. They can do a full day for half the price of the person that you’ve admired their work. The problem is the adage that we’ve all become used to. You get what you paid for. Today we compare Photography chains versus the Individual Photographer for your wedding.

Photography chains versus the Individual Photographer

Benefits of going with a Chain

The benefits are there. If they weren’t, they wouldn’t necessarily be in business. The biggest thing they have going for them is their price. They tend to be cheaper, because they’ve figured out how to cut costs in ways that allow them to be a low price. For the couples that are looking to check the box and ensure they get the photos and videos, they can go with these chains. They will get the job done and do it efficiently. We live in a world that values efficiency and effectiveness, so there’s nothing wrong with that.

They also have packages that go from the cheapest budget to the smallest budget. They can give you so much more for the same price as the individual. They have an army of photographers and videographers ready to work for whatever price they can get. That means you can get more if you have a little more to spend on your wedding.

Finally, they tend to make few mistakes, as they tend to vet the people. The last thing that anyone wants to do is give a refund. The chains know this upfront and try to vet their people as best they can before sending them out. This can mean that you are getting people that will follow the rules and not stray out of line. No chance of them ruining your wedding day in that case.

Photography Chains versus the Individual Photographer
His speech was not about photography, but he was photogenic.

Benefits of going with the Individual

The individual photographer does not always have a large company backing them up. They don’t have quotas to meet and they do this for the love of it. They have the freedom to do things that may be risky, but have a much larger reward. Even more than that, they have the time to get to know you. They won’t send you a form to fill out or a survey to take. They will meet with you at a coffee shop or brewery and they will get to know you for who you are. They will make your story be more personable.

They don’t tend to have as many clients, or if they do, they don’t have other obligations to meet with those clients. The good individual photographer and videographer will give you the time you deserve. The time that you pay for. It’s important to find a photographer or videographer that gives you that time. There’s nothing worse than a rush job, especially not when it comes to your story.

Finally, without a big chain backing them up, the individual has to be held personal responsible for any of the mistakes made during your big day. They don’t want to mess it up, because they lose your trust and your referral. The individual is going to work as hard as they can to ensure that you are incredibly happy when they send you your photos and videos. This comes with a price, yes, but you only have one wedding day.

Which do you choose? It’s tough.

Choosing

You need to do what is best for you as a couple. Don’t put yourselves into bankruptcy, because the photographer you want also caters to millionaires. Find ones that are in your area. Ones that understand you and ones that want to help you. They will be competitively priced to stay afloat, but most photographers and videographers will work with you and your budget.

Your story is your story. Meet with a few photographers and videographers, whether they be the chains or the individuals. One might come to be the apparent victor when you hear from them and learn what they can do. If one worked for one person, doesn’t always mean that they will work for you and your unique story. Keep that in mind and shop around a little bit. It’s your big day and you deserve the best.

The Wedding Photographer’s Guide to Posing

The Wedding Photographer’s Guide to Posing

Come on and Vogue. Let your body move to the music. Madonna said it and posed for it. Now we are here looking for ways to pose. Not all of us are models, in fact very few of us are. But that does not mean that posing has to be weird or awkward for us. Photography is happening all around us. For the most part, we know to smile and look at the camera, but what do you do when you’re taking your engagement and wedding photos? Do you look at the camera? Do you try to pose? Here’s The Wedding Photographer’s Guide to Posing.

Come on and Vogue

The Wedding Photographer’s Guide to Posing

Loving Poses

Wedding and engagements are all about the love you share with your significant other. The story of your love and who you are as a couple. Therefore, there are going to be a lot of loving-style poses. Getting close to one another. Kissing is going to happen a lot. There’s going to be lots of coming together and holding each other tight. For a lot of couples, these will not be anything new, but doing them in front of someone else can be a little intimidating. PDA is not a lot of couple’s style. But the pictures are meant to show your love, so don’t be afraid to get a little closer. No one is going to judge you, and if they do, send them our way. We’ll talk to them for you.

The poses to get ready for in the loving category are as follows.

  1. Kissing – That’s just normal in these shoots and on this day.
  2. Hugging – Another typical pose, so make sure you put on your deodorant.
  3. Holding hands – A pretty typical symbol for love that most people can do easily.
  4. Dipping – We’ve all seen it but a few don’t know how to do it. Practice at home, for sure.

The big thing you need to remember is if any of these things don’t seem like your style, be sure to let your photographer know. A good photographer wants to make you comfortable, not feeling awkward.

Fun Poses

Every now and then, you get to see poses that couples do that really blow up the social media feeds. The couple s just having fun, either with their wedding party or by themselves. You see the people laughing, maybe the groomsmen are doing something funny, or the bridesmaids have put on a funny face. Whatever the makeup of your wedding party, it’s important to make sure you have fun. The day is long and can be stressful, but the party isn’t just there to stand with you at the altar. They can help you have fun, even when posing.

Smiling is the most common pose that you will see in anyone’s album. The faces of those that celebrated their day showing off their teeth in big grinning faces. These are common, but for good reason. Smiles are what we do when we feel happy. They day is supposed to be happy. So the smile just fits. Show it off in whatever way you can, whether it be while laughing, or even just talking with your party. Let the smile come through in the pictures.

Now here’s a fun pose

Be Yourself

The most fun that we have had in photographing couple is when they come with some ideas for poses. They can do things that we have never even thought of. They really let their personality’s show in what they do. It is our job to let your personality show in the pictures, but from we can’t know everything about you, only you and possibly your therapist can do that. So don’t be afraid to let your personality show. Give the photographer some of your favorite poses that you’ve seen. Even go off script a little bit and do what you can.

We got to take some awesome engagement photos with Afton and Caleb. One of the things that we did with them was let the personality show. They came up with a few ideas of pretending to be on the cover of a rap album. They gave us some awesome photos with that. After, we came across the Viking ship in front of US Bank stadium. Naturally, we had to take photos as if they were Vikings. We had a blast and letting them just be themselves is what gave us some of the best photos. One thing we can give to you for this Wedding photographer’s guide to posing is to be yourself.

Photographer’s Responsibility

When you get a good photographer, they will come with poses ready to go. They will give you what you need to make your photos look spectacular. Not only that, but they will make you not feel awkward. They will put you at a sense of ease. The photographer needs to get good photos, they need to make you look good. If they are making you feel awkward and putting you out of your place, they are not doing it right. With that being said, sometimes a pose can feel a little weird. Not natural. But if you’ve got a good photographer, you can trust them. They know that the pose will look great, even if in the moment, it feels a little weird.

The Wedding Photographer’s Guide to Posing

You don’t have to be Madonna or a runway model to know how to pose. Really all that you need is a good photographer and the realization that the posing will only last for about a day. Don’t skimp on the photographers and don’t let your pictures be awkward. Instead, get someone you know you can trust. Check out our work. We’d love to tell your story and we have a lot of posing ideas for you.

Hannah’s Side Projects

Hannah’s Side Projects

The beauty of nature is all around us, especially in the great city of Minneapolis and the state of Minnesota. It’s hard to recognize it sometimes, especially while in the city. The nature gets swallowed by the urban landscapes that we have become accustomed to. But, with much resilience and fortitude, nature has found a way to work, even in the city. Part of that is due to great city planning, part due to the fact that nature can’t be beat. All of it though, can make for some awesome photographs. Today we talk about Hannah’s side projects, and one of them, is nature photography.

Nature Photography

Hannah has been surrounding herself with nature for quite some time now. She goes on bi-annual camping trips with her sister to the northern parts of Minnesota. She takes photos of the trees in the fall, stating that the color changes of Autumn are what really get her excited about the season. She is constantly trying to find new ways to show the snow in our area. There’s a lot of it, so you’ve got to make it worth it.

Hannah's Side Projects, autumn colors.
Look at all those colors in the trees. Hannah’s Side Projects look nice.

Hannah is taking a trip to the boundary waters this coming year in hopes to take some pictures of this beautiful landscape. We don’t mean to get political, but some politicians want to run a pipe through this area. Hannah wants them to not do that. She wants to ensure that these areas are not only remembered in their pristine nature, but she wants to raise awareness through her photography of what the world and people are doing to nature. These topics are very important to her.

Portrait Photography

Hannah’s next side project is in portrait photography. It’s easy to flip a phone into portrait mode and let it blur the background, but even better than that is actual portrait photography. She has taken many pictures of Davis, too much in his opinion. She has even photographed a project that took yearbook style photos from the 80s. The project was fun and Hannah was able to make the pictures look good thanks to her skill with the camera and the lens.

Hannah's Side Project for 80s style photos
Hannah’s Side Project of doing these 80s yearbook photos was so fun!

This skill has been the most helpful with marriage and wedding photography. You can see the passion she has for people in her pictures. Her art has helped her to tell a couple’s story even better than they explained it to her. And she doesn’t forget to add a little nature into each shot she takes, ensuring that everything is capture on this couple’s day. Her next skill has less to do with people and nature and more to do with house pets.

Hannah’s favorite Side Project: Cat Photography

If you have met Hannah in person, you know that she is absolutely in love with cats, especially her cats. Fats and Sully, the two little black cats that adorn her personal Instagram page. She’s even snuck a few pictures of them into our Instagram feed. These two cats look great. These photos help to remind us of how cute they are, especially when they decide to wake us up at 4 am for absolutely no reason.

Fats, the cat with a big tummy
This is Fats. He’s not great at being a cat, but he’s cute.

Now, we don’t know if you love cats, or if you want cats anywhere near your wedding, but if you did, Hannah would be your go-to photographer. Cats are her passion and taking pictures of them fuels her passion. She knows how to take great pictures of cats, ones that you will cherish for a long time. Let Hannah take pictures of your cats. It’s all she really wants, anyway. This is one of Hannah’s Side Projects that she very much enjoys.

The Pumpkin Picture

Davis is the author of this piece, if you couldn’t tell. He wants you to know about one picture of Hannah’s that really shows her skills, even with things as arbitrary as a pumpkin on a ledge in a bathroom at a brewery. Yep, you heard that right. The picture in question is below. I just want to leave it at that. Let the picture speak for itself.

Ending of Hannah’s Side Projects

So, if you’re in love with nature, people not only excite you, but you like looking at them, and your so infatuated with cats that you can’t stand it, look no farther than Hannah’s Instagram feed. Follow her here. And follow us here. Look for more photographs, weddings, and inspiration for yourself as you decide what you need a photo shoot for. It can be literally anything, but remember that a cat is fun to take pictures of. And we can take your photos, too!

What’s the Best Way to Remember Your Wedding Day?

Your wedding has just happened. The guests are buzzing. Love is in the air. That magic feeling is all around you and your partner, the wedding party, and all the attendees. They can’t wait to bring this feeling out into the world. Let everyone enjoy it with them. They still have a few days or maybe even a few weeks off until they see those they want to talk with. They finally see them and they can’t remember that feeling anymore. Life has happened in between now and then and it’s gone from the memory. They remember the big parts, but they’ve forgotten about the small stuff, no matter how hard they tried to remember. Then they get their photos. The feelings are all back again, as if magically printed into the scenes on the glossy paper. What’s the best way to remember your wedding day? Photos. That’s the answer.

What’s the Best Way to Remember Your Wedding Day?

What's the best way to remember your wedding? Photos.
This was in front of a crowd of people, but the right photographer will make you feel comfortable, no matter what.

Capture the Moment

Wedding Days are hectic. The day is filled with people you haven’t seen in a long time and those that you see all the time. They are all mixed together into one space. They are all there to celebrate you and your love. But, they all have different ways of doing that. You’ve got a cousin that wants to show off their dance moves on the floor. You great aunt wants to tell you the story of her wedding and how this reminded her of that. Your pesky little brother just wants to pull pranks, but not on your watch. There is just way too much going on, and we haven’t even touched the ceremony, the food, and the speeches. So many speeches.

With all of this craziness, it can be really easy to miss something. Even if you just go to the bathroom for a second, you could miss a great moment. That’s where the photographer comes in. They capture those moments, so you don’t have to be there for everything. We want to make your day be remembered. Forgetting can be the worst thing. We know that you can’t be everywhere at once. We also know that with the number of events happening, it’s darn near impossible to remember it all. That’s why the photos are the best way to remember the wedding. They capture the emotion as they are happening and you can enjoy it from the day you receive the photos to the end of eternity.

Why a Professional Photographer, Though?

Lots of people know how to take a photo. Everyone has a fairly decent camera in their pocket. We’ve seen plenty of weddings go with the no photographer route, thinking their friends and family will get the right pictures for them. There’s nothing wrong with this thinking, but there is a lot that goes into the photography that many don’t realize. The framing and composition of the photo is one thing. Ensuring they capture the emotion is another. Go to Instagram and look at your most active non-photographer friend’s page. You get to see some great stuff. Now, look for a professional photographer’s page. It’s astounding the difference. The way the photos look is beyond what you would imagine, even if it is something you’ve seen time and time again.

If you want to ensure that your photos don’t look like a shaky snapchat pic with a nasty looking filter, it’s important to go with a professional photographer. They have an obligation to getting you the best pictures. They want you to like what you see, because they want to tell your story. A photographer wants you to sing their praises to your newly engaged friends, as well. They also have the experience required to get those good-looking moments. Nothing against your friend’s Instagram page, but photography takes a ton of work that doesn’t cross the mind of a lot of influencer on social media.

These tow will remember their wedding day.

Why are Photographers so Expensive?

We talked about it a little in the last section, with the experience and obligation, but let’s jump into it here. Photographers can be expensive. As you do your research, you will likely find the good ones can be up to $5000, while even smaller inexperienced photographers still cost over $1000. It can seem like too much. The parts of photography that don’t seem so flashy are the reasons for the prices. It is very hard to get a photo to look good right out of the camera. There is a ton of work that goes into each photo before you get to see it. The photographer has experience here, as well. Ensuring the photo looks as close to the human eye image we saw on the actual wedding day.

We also need to pay for the parts that go into photography. The camera body and lenses. The flashes and extra batteries. They all incur a cost initially and maintaining them is not cheap, either. Keeping these things in mind, the price can seem a little less shocking. There are tons of stories of cheap photographers doing a poor job. You can’t redo the day, so sometimes it’s better to put up with the price, knowing that in a year or even fifty, you will thank yourself. You’ll know that the answer to “What’s the best way to remember your wedding day?” is Photos.

How to Save Money

Even though we talked about price, that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to still save money while getting quality. The first mistake a lot of couples make is to book the photographer for the whole day, when they really only need them for the ceremony and speeches. Work with your partner to find what is necessary for your photos before you look for booking. Sometimes a half day is more than enough for your wedding day and can be a huge cost saver.

Booking together with videography is also an option, especially with 2211 Media. We have photography and videography services, both of which will help you remember your wedding day in all its emotional glory. Booking together can lower the cost of the photography and get you everything you need without sacrificing on the quality. Look to our Packages for some options that work well with your wedding day.

Photographer and her camera. That's a way to remember.
If we haven’t convinced you, take a look at how cute Hannah is. That should work.

So, What’s the Best Way to Remember Your Wedding Day?

By now, you’ve got it. Don’t skimp on the photographer, because everyone holds onto their photos much longer than the initial year of their wedding. These photos will make it through each move the two of you go through. Make it through most events that happen in your life. And no matter what is happening in your life, you can look back on these photos and smile, remembering the magical feeling of your wedding day. So, Photographs is the answer to what’s the best way to remember your wedding.

About Our Photography

The art of capturing the still image. It is the photographer’s job to tell a story through this image with perspective, content, and emotion. That’s what Hannah does for us. The camera is a third eye for her. One that captures your story or any story, for that matter. Here is about our photography.

Who is Hannah?

Hannah hails from Detroit, MI, but has made NE Minneapolis her home. Hannah always loved fashion photography and found an interest in capturing moments from that. She later got into photography to capture the beauty of nature on her regular camping trips up north. The Tettegouche State Park area, Split Rock Lighthouse, and nature itself are what interested her. The translation from nature wedding photography was natural. Either way, a story is told and that story is necessary for the photographer.

Urban Engagement Session

Silhouetter urban engagement session

We had the pleasure of shooting an engagement session right in the heart of Minneapolis. The Stone Arch Bridge Area is a must-see and now we know as a must shoot for any urban engagement session that wants to feature Minneapolis. The bridge, the falls, the parks on either side and some great restaurants. Let’s talk about everything we learned on this gorgeous shoot.

Urabn engagement session on Stone Arch Bridge
Look at that dip. The first time they had done that.

The bridge area

The bridge itself is often populated with people. We were unsure how the crowds would be, but we had seen a lot of people taking pictures on the bridge before and most crowds would let people be. We were lucky enough to have a rainy day that subsided right before we started taking the pictures. The overcast skies acted like a soft box and made for some perfect lighting.

The cement and rails created some great lines that created solid horizons and visuals pointing straight to the couple. The falls allowed for variation in the background from the cement and urban environment. The walk through the bridge was nothing to sneeze at, either. We got a good workout during this session.

Mill City Museum, Guthrie, and Gold Medal Park

Silhouetter urban engagement session
Even their silhouettes showcase their love

The Mill City Museum is inside of some ruins of an old mill that burnt some time ago. The partially destroyed building creates a unique look on the Minneapolis skyline and perfect for this urban engagement session. We took some of our favorite photos outside of the building. The stone walls looked both castle-like and urban, allowing for us to create an amazing backdrop for the couple as they joked around and got more into the session.

The park beside the museum also allowed us to give some nature to this urban landscape. We took some of the artwork and made it the focal point of the pictures. The couple loved taking the photos and had some fun coming up with some new poses as we went. Backdrop of The Guthrie allowed us to take these stunning silhouette photos that are sure to set the couples pictures apart from the ones we’ve all seen on social media.

Lesson learned: Poses

Album pose urban engagement session
This couple loved to have some fun. That’s for sure.

Getting the couple to pose over and over again can sometimes feel a little repetitive and almost demanding. We had to find poses that not only showcased who they were, but showed the love they had for one another. We got this fun “album shot” that showcased their sense of humor. Not traditional, but definitely one of our favorites.

Overall: Urban Engagement Session

Having fun at the urban engagment session
This shoot was so much fun

We had a blast, learned a lot, and came up with some absolutely beautiful photos. We also were able to create a trailer for the couple. A “In a world” type trailer that will serve as an announcement of their upcoming wedding on Facebook, YouTube, and social media. Look for that in the coming weeks. Check out our options or book us.
